This Video shows us how the vocal folds of four singers two male and two female work. If you look carefully you will notice that the male vocal folds are longer than the female’s vocal folds and you will also notice that as the singers sing in their upper range the vocal folds get longer and as they sing in their lower range they get shorter.
We use our diaphragm when we sing and this video gives a detailed explanation of what happens to our diaphragms when we inhale and exhale. However you cannot FEEL the diaphragm when you sing, rather the sensation you get is your organs being pushed to one side as you breath into the lower abdomen.
This video shows an MRI scan of an opera singer and a beatbox singer. The difference in how the two voices work is fascinating.
My students tend to get a little bit squeamish when I show them videos of healthy vocal cords but you wait until tomorrow when I put a video of vocal cords with nodules due a student abusing their voice, that makes me feel squeamish.
So this is a video of a singing teacher/singer who has oversung for some time, f you look at it carefully you will see that the beginning of the nodules as little white lumps.
This singer is lucky she only needed rest and speech therapy but if she had not get help early on she might have needed surgery
Okay singers, if you weren't a little freaked out by the previous video on nodules and haven't understood that it is important to look after your voices then if this video does not put you off nothing, wil. Sometimes after surgery you can have a full recovery but sometimes your voice is affected. As a singer do you really want to take that risk
